I Tried The Kiwi Organic From My Green Mattress (Review)
Summary: We upgraded our mattress for the first time in over a decade to the Kiwi Organic Mattress from My Green Mattress — and we love it so much that we are building a new bed frame to go along with it! After our daughter’s big girl bed upgrade with the Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress, we had our eye on the brand for our own bed. Not only are their mattresses made from the safest materials (with the certifications to prove it!) but our whole family loves the mattress’s high-quality construction, comfy support, and undeniable coziness.
What We Love:
- The Kiwi Organic Mattress is made in the USA, handcrafted from GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool and GOLS-certified organic latex.
- Like the Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress, the Kiwi Organic utilizes an ingenious pocketed coil system, with 1,140 coils in a 7-zone support system.
- A two-inch layer of contouring organic latex makes this the ideal bed for sharing with a partner by minimizing motion transfer, while also relieving pressure for this side sleeper on my hips, and supporting spinal alignment.
Things To Keep In Mind:
- My husband is a firm-mattress lover, and I want something more contouring. The Kiwi Organic is classified as “medium-firm.” That said, a small number of reviewers are divided on whether the mattress is “too firm” or “extremely plush.” It might be a case of po-TAY-to/ po-TAH-to, but either way, the brand has a 365-night risk-free trial.
My husband and I bought our mattress on a Labor Day sale in 2013, just after moving in together for the first time. We had very limited funds from our nonprofit day jobs, so we were delighted to score something memory-foam adjacent from a local strip mall for under $500. They even threw in a full bedding set for free!
Over the years, we have flipped and rotated the mattress as recommended, and eventually extended its lifespan and our sleep quality with various toppers. But the only thing we ever truly loved about our old mattress was that we were able to afford it at a time when making home purchases was a novelty and a challenge.
“The only thing we ever truly loved about our old mattress was that we were able to afford it at a time when making home purchases was a novelty and a challenge.”
So much has changed in our lives since we strapped that discounted mattress to the roof of my 2011 Honda Fit and carefully drove it to our first little rental home. Most significantly? Our understanding of how essential our sleep health is to our overall wellbeing and longevity.
After our daughter upgraded from her toddler bed to a twin with her first real mattress from My Green Mattress, we experienced firsthand the difference between a quality bed and the um, vintage surface we’d been sleeping on. Reading time was a pile-on snugglefest every night in her room, lasting longer and longer as we were reluctant to get up and leave the comfiest bed in the house. Both my husband and I even stole away to nap in her room from time to time, baffling our daughter as to why we’d prefer to squish into her smaller bed when our queen-sized mattress was empty.
All this to say, when we had a chance to get a My Green Mattress of our own, we leapt at it — so fast we ended up moving into the guest room, starting a months-long DIY project to create the dream bedframe this mattress deserves.
My Green Mattress’s clean, quality guarantees
In 2013, all I knew about mattresses was that they were expensive. I’ve unfortunately gotten wise to the reality: It’s completely normal to find fiberglass and flame retardants among the materials in most conventional mattresses. This is why the certifications that My Green Mattress has on their products brings such peace of mind: The Kiwi Organic, like the Eco Pure, has earned the same top certifications from the organic mattress industry, including GOTS, GOLS, GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Labs, and MadeSafe® Certified.
“We knew we’d be getting something well-made without any invisible VOCs or offgassing to worry about.”
With the cleanest possible organic materials and the use of a timeless handtufted technique (eliminating the need for toxic adhesives), we knew we’d be getting something well-made without any invisible VOCs or offgassing to worry about.
As a consumer, I also love the 20-year warranty and 365-nights to trial the mattress. Because no matter how a mattress feels when you first lie on it, the truth is only revealed after you’ve spent many, many nights snoozing on it.
The Kiwi Organic Mattress
The shipping and arrival experience was nearly identical to when we ordered our daughter’s Pure Eco mattress: Quick and easy.
The Kiwi Organic arrived compressed in a simple cardboard box, rolled and wrapped in plastic. It’s a substantial mattress, with a height of 10” and an 8” interior coil system — so the box is heavy. Too heavy for the nifty little cardboard slots at the top of the box meant to be used as handles. We recommend having a buddy help you if you have to navigate stairs!

Once upstairs, I dragged it into the guest room, where I was planning to open the box and unwrap the mattress, for the 24-hour recommended period for it to fully expand. The experience was straightforward and again mirrored our time with the Pure Eco. I carefully cut the plastic, unrolled the mattress, and watched it slowly fill out onto the guest bed.
And reader, this is where I miscalculated.
Our guest room is also my office; I have a sleeper sofa that unfolds for a simple crash pad that we usually cover with a mattress pad for the rare guest to sleep on. I opened the Kiwi Organic Mattress on the foot of the sofa bed, unrolling and unwrapping it so it could decompress and reform without interference. The plan was to move it into our room over the weekend, when we both had time to do the laborious project of swapping the mattresses and dealing with our old one.

But then I cheated, and took a nap on the Kiwi.
Cut to weeks later: My husband and I have moved into the guest room so we can keep sleeping on the Kiwi. There is just no going back to our old mattress. We’d planned on moving it into our room on the original timeline, but then our ADHD muses intervened.
“My husband and I have moved into the guest room so we can keep sleeping on the Kiwi. There is just no going back to our old mattress. “
It all started with the simple comment about how, before we put the Kiwi on our wonky old bed frame, we should probably try to repair it. My husband is into woodworking and has been on a quest to practice hand-tool furniture making. So my comment wasn’t a simple chore to add to the list, but a spark of inspiration.
“Didn’t you say you always wanted an upholstered bed frame?” he asked me. Yes, I sure did. “It just seems like a lot of trouble to haul around mattresses,” he said. “We aren’t going to want to take it back off to make the frame later…”
I sighed, knowing where he was heading, and also that he was right. So now I’m working in my office and combo bedroom, and the primary room has become a sort of open closet and temporary woodshop.
But listen: No regrets! Because I’ve been having the absolute best sleep of my life on the Kiwi Organic mattress.

I don’t know how to describe it besides saying it just feels good to sink into it every day. I don’t even think I realized how hard our former foam mattress really was until I got to sleep on the Kiwi. As a side sleeper, I’m used to needing to manipulate several pillows into supporting rolls to keep my hips, neck, and shoulders from collapsing into a ball at night. But on the Kiwi, I lie down and find myself instantly at ease. The mattress is strong and doesn’t change shape in any noticeable way, but I feel a firm plushness that seems to hug me back as I move throughout the night.

Both my husband and I are also the sort of sleepers who need to readjust in semi-dramatic bursts of turning and flopping. This was incredibly annoying in our old bed, when, between the mattress and the wobbly bed frame, any movement made it seem like we were sleeping in a hammock on a capsizing ship. The Kiwi has almost no motion transfer, and combined with the upholstered sofa bed base, I’ve never slept in anything more secure.
My final thoughts
It’s safe to say that we are a My Green Mattress Family, no question! Between the brand’s commitment to the highest quality safety standards, organic and sustainable materials, and an actually comfortable yet supportive mattress, we’re totally committed.
“It’s safe to say that we are a My Green Mattress Family, no question!”
The Kiwi Organic offers an incredible value comparable to the organic mattress market: The queen starts at $1,319, with financing options available. With free, fast shipping in 1–4 days business days, plus its year-long trial offer and 20-year warranty, you can see why the customer reviews are so high.

If you’re looking for a quality mattress that won’t break the bank without any of the harmful chemicals, My Green Mattress is the first place to look for your best night’s sleep. We love it so much, we’re overhauling our bedroom and sleeping in the guest room on it, just so we don’t have to sacrifice one night with our Kiwi Organic until we can put it on the frame she deserves.
